What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

ASP College Mission Trips

ASP provides one of the most rewarding volunteer opportunities for college students in the nation — perfect for campus ministries, community outreach clubs, service learning groups, or just a group of friends.

You can volunteer for a week or a weekend any time between September through April, and serving with us is almost turn-key. You'll stay in a climate-controlled ASP center with bunk beds and meals included. You'll also have a chance to enjoy the cooler temperatures and stunning scenery that come during spring, winter, or fall breaks. Although summers are primarily designated for youth groups, adults and college groups are also encouraged to participate if they prefer to come during June, July, or August.

While on an ASP trip, you'll roll up your sleeves and lay shingles, replace linoleum or build handicapped ramps. You'll be matched with jobs that suit your skills. Even if you have no building experience at all, our staff will show you the ropes. They'll visit your work site each day to deliver supplies and monitor your progress

Best of all, your group will have time to bond with the family you are serving. You will be completely immersed in Appalachian culture. In fact, ASP can even provide material and evening programs to supplement classroom learning on social justice, poverty and Appalachian history. And if you are a campus ministry, we can provide worship and sessions on putting your faith in action. Whatever your groups' needs, your evening programming will be tailored to you — making sure your group has a transforming experience.

After a few days of hard work, your arms will grow a little stronger, and your relationships with your fellow volunteers a whole lot deeper. And you'll return to your campus with a passion for service — in fact, for many students, an ASP trip is the first step in a life-long vocation of serving others.

Because when you work to change the lives of others, they have a way of changing you.

Training debriefing
We provide many resources to help you prepare for the trip. We strongly encourage you to prepare carefully, and do team building exercises prior to your trip. You’ll have an even better experience if you do. During your trip, ASP will tailor your evening programming to your group's preferences. Our staff can lead an Evening Gathering to help you process your experience, with a focus on social justice issues, Appalachian history, worship and reflection, or even a night of Appalachian culture -- a local storyteller or bluegrass band. Or you may opt for free time to relax with other volunteers.

Mission Trip Offered By Appalachia Service Project

Appalachia Service Project (ASP) provides one of the most rewarding structured service opportunities in the nation — bringing thousands of volunteers from around the country to rural Central Appalachia to repair homes for low-income families. ASP is more than just a building program. Yes, Appalachia’s families urgently need your help, but they can help change your life; because when you change the lives of others, they have a way of changing you, too.

Appalachia Service Project (ASP) is a Christian ministry, open to all people, that inspires hope and service through volunteer home repair in Central Appalachia. Our vision is to see substandard housing in Central Appalachia eradicated and everyone who comes in contact with ASP transformed.
