What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

ASP volunteers work on a roof.

It doesn't matter if you can spare a week or a weekend — Appalachia Service Project will give you the opportunity to make a lasting difference in the world. Not to mention in your own life.

Whether you volunteer as an individual or with friends, a church group or a corporate group, we'll help you create an experience that's just right for you. Groups in our Year-Round program will stay in a climate-controlled ASP center with bunk beds and meals included. Though there is always demand for volunteer groups in the summer, we are encouraging groups to also consider serving in the spring, winter, or fall when you'll be able to enjoy cooler temperatures and stunning scenery.

While on an ASP trip, you'll lay shingles, replace linoleum, or build handicapped ramps. If you have construction experience, you'll be matched with jobs that suit your skills. Even if you have no building experience, our staff will show you the ropes — helping you develop skills you didn't even know you had.

ASP is more than a building program — it's a relationship ministry. You will spend a lot of time interacting with the Appalachian family you are helping. If you come with a group, you'll return home after forming a bond with the other members of the group.

Whether you're a student, in college, mid-career or retired, your ASP experience will enrich your life. You'll develop a true heart for Christian service and come home energized and ready to give back to your church, your workplace, your community.

When you move to help those in need, God moves in you. And when you work to change the lives of others, they have a way of changing you.

Training debriefing
We provide many resources to help you prepare for the trip including Appalachian history and culture. We strongly encourage you to prepare carefully, and do team building exercises prior to your trip. You’ll have an even better experience if you do. During your trip, ASP will tailor your evening programming to your group's preferences. Our staff can lead an Evening Gathering to help you process your experience, with a focus on social justice issues, Appalachian history, worship and reflection, or even a night of Appalachian culture -- a local storyteller or bluegrass band. Or you may opt for free time to relax with other volunteers.

Mission Trip Offered By Appalachia Service Project

Appalachia Service Project (ASP) provides one of the most rewarding structured service opportunities in the nation — bringing thousands of volunteers from around the country to rural Central Appalachia to repair homes for low-income families. ASP is more than just a building program. Yes, Appalachia’s families urgently need your help, but they can help change your life; because when you change the lives of others, they have a way of changing you, too.

Appalachia Service Project (ASP) is a Christian ministry, open to all people, that inspires hope and service through volunteer home repair in Central Appalachia. Our vision is to see substandard housing in Central Appalachia eradicated and everyone who comes in contact with ASP transformed.
