What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

Ireland 2 The things you’ve probably heard about Ireland are true: the rolling countryside that spreads across this island country is like a patchwork of vibrant greens sewn together, dotted with medieval castle ruins and cobblestoned city squares, that butt up against its jagged and rocky seaside cliffs. It is a country who has a deep and rich history, and, for a time, was home to a vibrant faith community that gave the world Christian figures like St. Patrick himself. Now, centuries later, religion and a personal relationship with Jesus seems to have lost its place among the Irish, despite the country’s infamous feud involving religion itself! After years of conflict and strife, travel to Ireland this summer and share about the peace of Christ that will not only heal her people, but unify them as well.

Ministry— Ireland has a strong history of Catholicism and Protestantism, however, due to centuries of conflict between the two, many Irish youth have become disillusioned with the idea of established religion. You’ll partner with local churches and an increasingly well-known surfing ministry to make new friends and share about the new, meaningful life Jesus desires for them to live. Following Christ doesn’t have to mean any of these old fashioned notions that are associated with their grandparents; faith in Christ and living for Him today is relevant and does matter, and you get to be a part of making that known amongst this generation of Irish youth!

Adventure—Seeking adventure? How about traveling to an island that looks like it comes right out of a fairy tale? Explore thousand-year old castles, walk the beaches of the North Coast, surf in the Atlantic Ocean, and maybe even enjoy a taste of your own heritage. Over 10% of Americans have some Irish ancestry, meaning for some of you this could be your opportunity to see the motherland.

Experience Culture—Although Ireland is an English-speaking country, their regional accents have varying degrees of thickness, which will provide you plenty of opportunity to ask, “Could you repeat that?” And just when you think you have the accent mastered, you will move to your second ministry location and have to start over. The sun sets very late in Ireland, resulting in activities usually starting later and ending even later. Like most Europeans, the Irish tend to be night owls, which means that a bulk of your ministry will extend late into the night. But don’t fret, if there’s one thing Ireland knows how to do right, it’s a proper cup of tea or coffee, fueling European nightlife for centuries! One of the most famous symbols within the country is the Claddagh. You may not have heard of it before, but you will know it by the end of your time in Ireland. The symbol is comprised of two hands which hold a heart and have a crown sitting on top. The two hands are said to represent friendship, the heart is love, and the crown symbolizes loyalty. These character traits are very important to the Irish and something they seek to embody themselves. Knowing that, the Claddagh couldn’t be more fitting.
