What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

Nepal Mission Trip

Nepal is rugged and awe-inspiring. It has a society that is rapidly developing and changing yet still remains rooted in ancient cultures and belief – there are more temples than houses, more gods than people, and more holy days than there are days in the year. Every day in Nepal brings new, unexpected, and unforgettable experiences!

Ministry—Ministry opportunities are never in short supply, and each day will find you traveling to a new location. You’ll hike through rice paddies to pray over village believers, intentionally strike up conversations with fellow travelers at the corner coffee shop, and venture into some of the numerous slums to help feed children before school. On other days, you’ll spend time loving on people at a leprosy colony, host crazy dance parties to bring joy to kids at an orphanage, and meet with full-time Christian workers to gain first-hand knowledge on the frontline efforts to combat human trafficking. All these are normal experiences on the Nepal mission trip.

Adventure—The country is more than side-stepping holy cows and dodging motorcycles on your way to get a Nepali tea. You’ll trek to Australian Camp (elevation 6,000 ft.) where the breathtaking, snow-capped Annapurna range opens up before you – it’s a feast for your eyes. And for a change of scenery, you’ll head to Chitwan National Park where you can do some bareback riding on elephants. But be at peace, not only are the elephants loved, well-treated, and protected, they provide a source of income for impoverished villagers.

For those of you who value something more urban, venturing outside your hotel in the bustling Thamel district of Katmandu is a true sensory experience. Amidst the noise, sights, and smells, you’ll find silver jewelry, colorful tapestries, and knock-off brand name clothes and mountaineering gear. A word of warning – Nepali shopkeepers are professionals in the art of bargaining.

Experience Culture—Because Hinduism and Buddhism dominate the religious scene, you’ll explore temples and monasteries dedicated to various gods, gurus, and Buddhas in an effort to better understand the people. And when religious practice and ancient customs clash with Western influence, the result is a wild and exotic display of sights, sounds, and smells. The blending of incense, burning trash, diesel exhaust, and sizzling samosa being cooked on the street creates a unique and unforgettable aroma.
