What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

Playing a village team on their football field before sharing Jesus International Christian Youthworks, (www.icy.org.uk) is a global family of like-minded youth ministries which gives us a pretty unique opportunity of providing you with the opportunity to go on mission through a western based organization but to serve with and for nationals. We specifically are focussing on Kenya - so see www.icyafrica.org In this case you will join the Kenyan team in their regular youth ministry in the slums and then head off with them on mission in the bush. You will live, minister, travel and eat with Africans, but as part of a western team. The administration of your application and your orientation will be offered from both a western and African perspective.

We’ve been exchanging mission-hearted young adults between our partners for over thirteen years now, and believe our program offers you the most authentic, affordable, productive and safe mission trip. Ultimately your trip is overseen personally by the International Directors of ICY, David and Linda Isgrove, and the US Coordinator, Dre Acosta. You and your families will be given their personal contact details to ask any questions you may like by phone, skype or email. But practically your application is administered from East Africa, which not only reduces your costs, but provides employment for African Christians and enables you to build relationships with those you will serve right from the outset and keep in touch with what is going on right at grass roots level.

ICY Africa is a partnership of African led youth ministries each with a passion for African youth ministry, carried out in a Biblical, caring and African way. The ICY Africa office is based in Nairobi Kenya and is run by Joe Bonga, our African Director, who after David, will be your first contact.

ICY Africa are our Kenyan partner ministry. They work extensively with some of the very poorest young people, for example through programs which teach slum girls a dignity and self worth. It shares the gospel with all ages in schools, prisons and orphanages, and takes every opportunity to go out into the bush on mission to those who've never heard. The discipleship program is provided by Bible Teachers, mainly former slum kids who've graduated from the ICY year long Missional Leadership Diploma.

In June, July or August we are offering you the opportunity to join the team. You will have a chance to get involved in the regular ICY program in Nairobi or one of the 40 centres across Kenya in villages, towns and cities. There is also a Art to Heart program which uses performing arts and dance to minister to autistic and disabled children as well as street evangelism. Sports ministry is also used to reach out to kids, especially in the villages.
Or you can work in Riverside School, started by our team of volunteers in one of the poorest areas in Kenya out in the bush. Many of the kids are orphaned by Aids.

The way it works is that you work out when you can come and how long you can stay for and then you just join in with whatever the team are up to. You just pay $30 a day for your board, lodging, ministry expenses and local transport ($50 in Nairobi), so in many ways the longer you come the better. We also ask for a gift of $350 towards the work and the volunteers. Those coming for late June may like to leave a little earlier and break their journey on the way out in London. Here you can connect with ICY youth workers from across Europe on an ICY Europe conference run by Reign Ministries UK. Then you can get experience of two continents in just a few weeks! The shortest time we suggest is two weeks, but there is no upper limit. You also pay $30 for the airport shuttle and any safaris or internal long journeys.

In other words if you come for 14 days the total cost could be as low as $870, or for 30 days the total cost will be $1350 excluding flights.

Your other costs are your air fare, (Sadly this is peak time, but you should get a flight for about $1800 or less), your visa costs of $50 and obtainable at Nairobi airport, any vaccinations, (you’d need yellow fever inoculation and anti-malarial treatment), and travel insurance. Otherwise the only other costs will be what you spend on sodas and presents! Don't forget to get a passport!!

Have a look at our web site, www.icyafrica.org and www.icy.org.uk and click on missions to find out more. There are videos to watch and a comprehensive PDF Mission Trip Manual to download. If you’re on Facebook, you might like to visit the ICY Africa Facebook group where you can hear from the guys who are in Africa or who have just returned, and see lots of photos.

This opportunity will particularly suit those with a heart for youth ministry or mission. It is not a holiday! It demands a high level of maturity and a certain degree of confidence and independence. You will be joining a team, but not as a passenger. Everyone will be expected to be up for a challenge, have a heart to reach youth and serve, be flexible and humble enough to accept unfamiliar cultural situations and changes to programs, for which Africa is famous! ICY is a partnership of like minded youth ministries around the world, including the US, Canada, UK and Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the Middle East who work together to provide mission, training and study opportunities for young people interested in mission and youth ministry. Because we are both global and local we hope we can offer you the very best mission trip experience. On the one hand our international office is western based and led, while on the other, all mission trips are coordinated locally by nationals. We hope therefore to give the best of both worlds: western organization and values merging with local culture and values. We handle hundreds of mission trip applications a year, but still want to offer a very personal care and service to all those who join our global community. For instance your application goes first to David and Linda Isgrove, the International African Directors, who will offer you the chance to talk to them personally about the opportunities. Once on the team, you, your parents and church will be given their personal contact details, and are available to answer any questions you may have. Find out more about ICY on the website, www.icyafrica.org, or on the Facebook group ICY Africa.
