What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

Chad sunset.jpg

English teachers are needed for our Learning Centres, located in the towns of Abeche, in northern Chad.

We currently run an English programme where the classes run in ten week blocks.  English is taught through English, so teaching is an option even if a worker (a short-termer, for example) does not speak French.  We do not require professional certification (i.e., TOEFL, TESL, etc.) to teach, although training in these areas would certainly be beneficial.  Any prior teaching experience (classroom, Sunday School, Bible studies) also provides a good foundation.  In the final two levels of study the curriculum is based on stories from the Old and New Testaments which creates the opportunity for ongoing conversations with those interested.

Students are from all walks of life: farmers, merchants, soldiers, artists, teachers, doctors, engineers, and government officials, who have a desire to learn or improve their English. This is a great opportunity to touch different levels of society with the truth of Christ. Courses are offered for beginner through advanced levels, but we never have enough teachers to offer as many classes as are needed. Often students have to wait months to continue to the next level. Come join us to make this ministry an even more effective tool for the truth!

Each course lasts from ten to twelve weeks at a time with a break of several weeks between sessions. The English programme usually starts the first week of October and finishes the beginning of June. A teacher typically has two or three class levels per term.  Each class has no more than 16 students and meets twice a week for 90 minutes.  Printed lesson sheets are available for the students, and these form the base of the class content.  There is a reasonable amount of lesson preparation to be done by the teacher and homework to be graded.

Other opportunities through the English program include tutoring high school students in English and participating in the English Club for advanced English speakers. A minimum commitment of four months is needed but six months to a year is even better. Knowledge of French is helpful for a more effective ministry. While you are in Chad you will also have the opportunity to learn the beautiful local Arabic dialect and experience the love conveyed through speaking to someone in their native language.

We are looking for: college aged, adult, and senior men who have a passion for Christ, a willingness to learn, good level of English; readiness to learn Chadian Arabic in spare time; readiness to build relationships with local people; readiness to be fully part of the Branch

In Chad, we have a wide open door to serve Christ in a Muslim environment. Christian missions are welcome and are able to work openly. We have many opportunities to serve people in Jesus' name, through urban outreach, teaching English, working with students, helping the poor, using the media and much more. We work with several unreached peoples including nomads. Chad has the rare distinction of being a place where you can work with Arabs on a missionary visa. There are so many unreached peoples here and, for the moment, a great freedom to work.

The time is now.

Relation of Opportunity to National Church and/or Long-term Goals

We work together as a team and with others to serve people so that they might know the love of God and form communities of disciples who reach out to those around them. We seek to express the love of Christ in word and deed through a variety of activities.

It is a collaborative approach, committed to working in close cooperation with the national church and with other missions. It is above all a dependent approach, committed to full dependence on God and his exclusive power to change lives and build his Church.
