What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

Additional Information

1. What are some ministry tasks that you want the intern to accomplish while serving with you?

  • To choose and/or create an effective program for teaching English to the community as a bridge for sharing the gospel.

  • To lead other team members and be the primary responsible person in the successful execution of the english program through regularly offered courses/classes/camps which engage various community groups in learning english.

  • To work with local believers to share the gospel, pray and minister with community members, and connect them to the local church.

  • If appropriate, to lead a small group in english or read the bible and disciple other believers.

  • To make a plan for the continuation of this ministry, its expansion, and the formation of a team of local believers to continue the ministry when interns are not available.

2. What would a typical day look like?

Depending on the structure of the program, classes could occur all day for several weeks or several times throughout the week for a few hours at a time. This would be largely dependent on the intern and the input of the Ukrainians of when classes would work best. The intern would also need time outside of class hours to rest, spend time in the word and prayer, prepare or evaluate classes, and for building relationships and individual discipleship and encouragement. Here are two example schedules:

If week(s) – long English camp:

  • Before 10am: devotional time
  • 10am-12pm: English teaching
  • 12-1pm: Lunch/Break
  • 1-4pm: English teaching
  • Evenings free for church activities/rest/preparation/Ukrainian or cultural learning

If classes throughout the week over several weeks:

  • 10-12pm: class/speaking club for students
  • Afternoon free or visits to schools, local government, universities, Ukr/cultural learning
  • 6-8pm: Evening classes for adults who work or students

3. Please list specific skills an intern may expect to develop by the time the internship is completed.

  • Basic Ukrainian language skills (the amount of motivation and effort put in to learn/work with a tutor will result in faster assimilation and learning)

  • Classroom/real world experience teaching english as a second/foreign language to various groups (not necessarily all):

    • kids & teenagers

    • college/university students

    • adults

    • local government officials

    • church members

    • veterans

  • Management and leadership skills planning, executing, and evaluating a successful english program as well as team building and strategic planning to continue the ministry and make it sustainable

  • Experience sharing the gospel and using english teaching as a bridge for community relationships and gospel conversations

  • Experience discipling other believers cross-culturally

  • Cross-cultural communication, conflict-management, time management, and adjusting to living and serving in another culture and in a conflict zone

  • Experience serving those with trauma, from impoverished communities, and other difficult life situations

  • Potentially asset based community development by looking for opportunities to be collaborative and use existing resources and assets in the community to carry out the project

  • Problem solving and resilience in overcoming obstacles and discouragement

  • Understanding of the blessings and barriers facing gospel growth in Ukraine while co-suffering alongside local believers

Relation of Opportunity to National Church and/or Long-term Goals

The church in Kremenets is a baptist church that is in between traditional and modern. They use instruments in worship but do not clap or raise their hands, and worship is mostly a time to listen or sing-along. Services last 2 hours and can include up to 3 sermons. Women wear dresses and a few wear head coverings, where guys wear dress pants and a dress shirt or are sometimes more casual.

It will be helpful if they can speak Portuguese or Spanish. All participants will have a debrief interview with the person from our Mobilization Department who mentored and coached them before and during their time of service.
