Youth or Adult Group Trip - 1 Week -The Spirit Lake Reservation is located in eastern North Dakota, about 100 miles due west of Grand Forks and the Minnesota border. The Spirit Lake people are members of the tribal bands we commonly call Sioux. There are several Native American communities in this region. The topography of the Reservation is generally consistent with the Northern Plains region, with both flat terrain and rolling hills, and some wooded areas. The Spirit Lake Tribe Indian Reservation covers approximately 405 square miles of beautiful lands. The Spirit Lake Nation reservation, about 495 square miles, was established in 1867. The Reservation is located in East Central North Dakota. There are approximately 7,300 enrolled members of the Spirit Lake Tribe, although only just over 2,000 live on the reservation. The Reservations unemployment rate is between 40-60%.

What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

The Spirit Lake people have had many years of exposure to the Gospel of Jesus.  Among them are believers of heroic courage, determined to live for Christ and wage prayer war for their brothers and sisters. We are privileged to work in ministry partnership with several of these warriors but there is still plenty of room for ministry here.

Pastor wants to invest in your team. He wants to paint the true picture of Native culture, religious beliefs, and values. He wants to give you more tribal history and more understanding about why Natives have been so resistant to the Gospel. So come prepared to dive in, learn and invest deeply into the Spirit Lake region!

Ministry
Ministry at Spirit Lake begins with the Pastor and what he sees as God’s plan for using your team on this mission. Of course, we will build the ministry plan from there to develop a win/win opportunity for all. At Spirit Lake you might be doing one or more of the following ministry activities:
Vacation Bible School: Help us stage a VBS for all reservation kids!
Family Outreach: Spend the whole week with a designated family, helping with the kids, cleaning, and most importantly eating and talking together, sharing lives and Jesus
Work/Service Projects: help with small work projects for elderly people on the Reservation and while also building a relationship with them.
Home Visits: get to hear people’s stories, and share your own experiences.

Lodging
The church, Dakota Oyate Lutheran Church, pastored by AIM ministry partners Larry and Darla Thiele, will be mission headquarters. Food will be stored, prepared, and served out of the church kitchen. Your team will sleep on the floor of the Sunday School rooms. You will need to supply your own bedding, pillow air mattresses or cots. There are two bathrooms, each with a toilet, a sink, and a shower. Yes, it will be rustic and demand for the bathrooms will be high. It’s a mission trip-keep your focus on Jesus and what He wants of you there, not on the inconveniences you’ll face for one week.

Travel
You will need to provide your own transportation during the duration of your stay. Most groups fly or drive in and then obtain a rental vehicle if needed. If you are flying in, you’ll want to check out Fargo Airport, Grand Forks Airport, or Bismarck Airport. Please reserve rental vehicles in advance. Upon arrival, drive to the church in Sheyenne, North Dakota, on the reservation. Your group will use your vehicles for team movement throughout the mission.

Mission Trip Offered By Adventures in Missions

You want to follow Jesus’s example in the way He cared for the lost and the hurting. You want to take up Jesus’s commission to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28) and be His witness to the ends of the earth (Acts 1).

Adventures in Missions is an interdenominational missions organization that focuses on discipleship. We emphasize prayer and relationships in our work around the world. We seek to disciple as Jesus did; our vision is that God would use us to raise up a generation of radically committed disciples of Jesus Christ.

Since we were established in 1989, we have taken over 115,000 people into the mission field, some for as short as a week and others for as long as a year or longer. We minister year-round through our ministry bases and strategic ministry partnerships. We believe that by giving people the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and join what God is doing in other cultures and nations, lives are transformed.
