Disaster Rebuilding individuals needed in Mound Bayou, MS, between January 29-February 12, 2022. Individuals can participate as many days as they are available. Mound Bayou, MS, was hit by flooding on July 8. Approximately 400 homes in four communities were flooded. Currently most of the homeowners are living with relatives, or have found other temporary housing. The State of Mississippi did not declare this event as a "Disaster," which means there will be no federal funding to help homeowners return to their homes. All of the homeowners are low-income African-American families. Needed are skilled workers, and people able to assist, who can install sheetrock and mud, lay flooring, replace electrical work, replace doors and replace cabinets.

What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

20211109_132018.jpg

Disaster Rebuilding individuals needed in Mound Bayou, MS, between January 29-February 12, 2022. Individuals can participate as many days as they are available. The volunteers will be under the authority of the Bolivar County Long-Term Disaster Response Committee and the Walk of Faith Covenant Church of Mound Bayou, MS. Merge staff with experience in disaster rebuilding will be leading the trip to facilitate the volunteers.

Mound Bayou, MS, was hit by flooding on July 8. Approximately 400 homes in four communities were flooded. Currently most of the homeowners are living with relatives, or have found other temporary housing.

*The construction needs include:

  • Replacing the bottom few feet of sheetrock, plus mudding, in entire homes
  • Installing tile/laminate floors in homes that had wood floors ruined by the flood
  • Painting
  • Electrical work – replacing what was damaged low in walls
  • Replacing kitchen and bathroom cabinets which were damaged
  • Replacing doors

*In order to make the teams work we need some people on each team with professional-quality level at least for hanging sheetrock and mudding. Painting can be done by many. Electricians would be super helpful. Professionals always need assistants, so as long as we have the skilled labor, we can utilize unskilled labor as well.

*Because of the lack of funds for these families we are going to need money to purchase materials. We would use a mixture of insurance money, State of Mississippi money, and any money work teams can provide to have the materials needed to work on homes.

*If teams choose to drive, they will need to bring as many tools as they can for the types of projects listed. There are few tools available in Mound Bayou.

*There are few professional construction workers available in the area even if people have insurance and savings to help rebuild their homes. The amount of work is overwhelming the number of skilled workers in the area.

*In order to feed and take care of the volunteers, we ask for a $25 per day donation, which will cover food and some expenses.

This trip is Mutually Designed with local partners from Mound Bayou.

All trips are led, staffed and implemented by Merge staff, local pastors, and the Bolivar County Long-Term Disaster Response Committee. Merge is an organization directed by a leadership team made up of non-American Global Church leaders from around the world. Once your team sends in a deposit, Dale Lusk, the International Director of Global Engagements, will contact your team leaders and work with your team, and the local church leaders, to develop an itinerary.

Housing – Free housing is available at churches in the nearby town of Cleveland, MS. There are showers at these sites. If teams prefer to stay in a hotel, there are hotels available in Cleveland as well.

Food – Usually teams are fed two-American/Canadian-style uncooked meals each day, and one cooked Southern meal made by local cooks.

Flights – teams would fly to Memphis, TN. Memphis is the closest large airport to Mound Bayou (1 hour 45 minutes away).

Ground Transportation – Driving to Mound Bayou with tools would be preferred.

Learning – Learning activites with local church leaders and Merge staff will be designed into the itinerary.

Cultural Activities – Mound Bayou has a rich African-American history. It was the first incorporated all-Black town in the South. Martin Luther King, T.R.M. Howard, and Medgar Evers all had parts to play in the history of Mound Bayou, which is illustrated in a local museum of Mound Bayou history.

Mission Trip Offered By Merge

The GLOBAL CHURCH INVITING North Americans TO PARTICIPATE IN WHAT GOD IS DOING AROUND THE WORLD. Merge is directed by a team of Global Church leaders from five continents. All Merge trips are organized, led, and staffed by the Global Church. This gives Merge a UNIQUE non-North American perspective on short-term trips.

THE GLOBAL CHURCH INVITING – the initiative and leadership are from the Global Church, not the North American church to GO and lead
TO PARTICIPATE IN – the participation is active involvement and learning through what the Global Church is already doing. The focus is on involvement WITH, not doing FOR – active learning involves participation as well as reflection
WHAT GOD IS DOING AROUND THE WORLD – Missio Dei – God is actively involved around the world – North Americans can discover what God is already doing through followers of Christ around the world

OUTCOME – for participants from North America and the Global Church to be strengthened in their relationship with Jesus Christ, increase in passion for inter-cultural relationships, to implement God-inspired behaviors, and initiate new ministries and social change in their church and communities

Primary Values include:

LEARNING – God is doing amazing things through the global church. There is so much to learn about ministry and how God is working around the world. Come and learn!
RELATIONSHIPS – The kingdom of God is built on relationships, which are the key to a successful mission and ministry. Come and connect with followers of Jesus from around the world.
BRING IT HOME WITH YOU – When you return home, we want your vision and passion for your church, your community, and your own life in Christ to expand
