What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

Program Details

The first part of the GAP (one year) internship program is to participate as a mission trip leader (or leader in training) with a Teen Missions summer team. Candidates must attend a Teen Missions Leader Training Seminar prior to the summer missions trip. Placement on a team as a mission trip leader is based on recommendations and on passing a state criminal background check. If you are 18 or 19, you could be placed as a leader in training based on your recommendations. Ideally, you would be placed on a summer mission trip that takes you to the country where you would remain afterward to begin your missionary service.

Once the North American team is over you would report to the base country coordinator to receive your responsibilities. If you choose a base in Africa, you would have the opportunity to work at one of our Rescue Units, living in a rural bush setting and working day-to-day with orphans. At many of our bases, you could assist with teaching Sunday school and literacy classes to the children and adults who come each week. All bases will require physical as well as spiritual work.

Total involvement expense is: Summer mission trip cost + $500 a month.

Summer expense is due by the time you leave the country; the rest of the funds can come in over the course of the year with the final payment due by September 1 of the termination year. You will also be responsible for passport fees, country visa fees, medical/evacuation insurance and any immunizations. We will print prayer cards and letters to assist you in your fundraising efforts.

Missionary & Leadership Training:

Training will take place for three weeks in Merritt Island, FL. You will be trained in the following areas: basic first aid, culture, motorcycle riding, gardening and agriculture, literacy, teaching children, and basic Teen Missions policies.

Requirement:  You must be 18 years of age or older.

Relation of Opportunity to National Church and/or Long-term Goals

With 50+ years of experience in long and short term missions ministry, Teen Missions has developed a strong relationship with the national church. Teen Missions has ministry bases in 22 countries where local youth from the national churches receive training and national church ministries receive work and evangelism projects. With over 300 full-time staff members (mostly nationals), we have a long-term presence on the ground long after the short-term team departs. This ensures that the valuable work and evangelism ministries of our summer teams are woven into the daily year-round efforts of the local host effecting lasting change and ministry fruit. Most of our teams are hosted by our own national full-time staff missionaries. Other teams are hosted by national churches and local ministries with whom, in most cases, we’ve been working with for years (if not decades).

Training debriefing
TRAINING – Your time begins with summer team leader training for one week before the teens arrive at our rugged 250-acre training facility in Merritt Island, FL. Once the teens arrive, the two-week primitive camp acquaints youth and their leaders with realistic conditions of the mission field. Young missionaries learn teamwork and unity on the daily timed Obstacle Course, and experience each training activity as a team. All teams receive classes in Bible and evangelism, as well as church and open air presentation skills (music, testimony sharing, drama, puppets), and also spiritual and practical survival skills. Each team will also receive training relative to their specific project (construction basics, TESL-Teaching English as Second Language, motorcycle riding, first aid, reading glass assessment, choir, clowning, video/film, etc.). Trained adult leaders maintain strong discipline at Boot Camp and on the field. Boot Camp climaxes with a candlelight Commissioning Service under the Big Top tent, when youth and leaders depart for their particular projects. As a Gap Year Volunteer, you will remain in the country when the team departs. DEBRIEFING - You will have a short time back at our Florida headquarters for debrief before heading home at the end of your year.
