What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

YOUTH WORKER
Locations: Serrekunda, and Bwiam, Sibanor, Nemakunku

SERREKUNDA: working nationals in a campus ministry doing Bible studies, orgainzing events and discipling.

BWIAM is a large student town with about 3000 people. The farm also has a centre where students and youth frequently meet for fellowship and have access to videos, tapes and literature.

SIBANOR: The village of Sibanor is strung out along the dusty Banjul to Basse highway, about two hours by car from the coast. On a busy clinic morning the hospital gate is a riot of color and activity: mothers dressed in their brightest and best outfits, sleeping babies on their backs, old men in their long robes and caps, uniformed school children, donkey-cart ambulances, cheeky goats, bored looking oxen, skulking vultures and the various vendors selling seasonal fruit and vegetables and bracelets.

NEMAKUNKU: A WEC skill centre has been running in Nemakunku for several years. The centre is predominantly used for educational training for those who have not had the opportunity to go to school and is open to anyone from Nemakunku and surrounding villages. Emphasis is on learning to read and write and acquiring a skill that will enable the students to support themselves. In a one year programme, teaching is provided in literacy (Mandinka and English), tie & dye, tailoring, health education.
A key part of the programme is helping the students to be self supporting. They are taught how to run a small scale business and a savings scheme helps them to save start up capital. During the programme students make various articles and are assisted in selling them. In agreement with each student, profits from the sales are saved. Many students have gone on to use this capital to successfully start their own tailoring or material businesses.
