Millions of children fight to survive in the streets of South America. World Servants partners with the Garden of Eden orphanage in Salcedo, Ecuador to meet their physical and spiritual needs.

What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

Since 1987, World Servants has served in Ecuador. Teams have built churches, schools, orphanages, clinics, facilitating ministry focused on the Quiche Indians. The mission experience will be a unique time of serving by completing a construction project for the boys living at the Garden of Eden (Jardin del Eden), learning, exploring, having fun and developing long term friendships. You will go home with a new perspective on the world, God, yourself and others while having an experience you will not forget.

Garden of Eden, a small home in the highlands of Ecuador, came into being in 1989 as a private initiative of two Ecuadorian students, Roberto Altamirano and Anita Constante. Roberto, along with his brother, had lived in an orphanage as a child. As an adult, Roberto paid regular weekend visits to prisoners in several jails in Ecuador. It was on one of these visits that he came to realize the miserable situation of some children who had no choice but to live in jail with their condemned parents. They had no other home. Moved by the children’s situation, one day Roberto heard the following words from one of the prisoners, “Nice of you to come visiting and talking, but you are like all the others. You just talk, but you don’t act. Go do something.”

Roberto decided after this conversation to dedicate his life to these children. A short time later he and his wife Anita founded the Garden of Eden Home. In spite of financial challenges, they were able to rescue 15 children from their miserable living conditions. Garden of Eden hosts children mistreated or abandoned by their parents, children who used to work and live in the streets, children who lived with their imprisoned parents, children without parents, and children whose parents are unable to support them.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Flexibility is the key! All participants are asked to remain flexible and open to the opportunities for “being” and “doing” what the Spirit provides. Ministry and outreach activities are customized to the communities’ specific needs and are specifically determined closer to the time of the trip. Our goal is to best partner with the community we are going to serve. Please keep this in mind when discussing trip details with potential participants!

Relation of Opportunity to National Church and/or Long-term Goals

For sustainable, long-term impact, World Servants work with our host communities long before you arrive. A team of in-field community leaders are identified to build a vision for their community. We train and equip these leaders to successfully partner with our short-term teams in an effort to build long-term relationships.

Once the short-term mission teams leave, we continue to strengthen relationships with community leaders and identify extended opportunities for you to come alongside them, as well.
