What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

Teaching the children from the local community

Colombia: -MISSIONS INTERNSHIP-

Bogota

Q & A with ACTION missionary Javier Riano:

1. What are some ministry tasks that you want the intern to accomplish while serving with you?

Interns would come work alongside the local missionary to minister to children at risk and the urban and rural poor through street evangelism. This ministry reaches out to the poor in Ciudad Bolivar, the largest region in Bogotá with almost a million people living in substandard housing. This ministry reaches out to over 200 people weekly. The Gospel is penetrating this poor area!

Preparing and serving food as part of our feeding program to local families, leading songs or crafts, local outreach to families and home visitations to pray and encourage local believers.

Yearly evangelistic camps are held in Colombia for impoverished children and youth as an evangelistic tool. These young people attend a camp that is outside of the city to discover a relationship with a loving God and understand how to grow spiritually. The follow-up continues after the event with hopes to incorporate them into a local church. Interns would assist in all aspects of this!

2. What are some key lessons from your ministry and walk with the Lord that you want to impart to the interns to help them as they consider their own individual call to missions or vocational ministry?

  • The importance of growing in your relationship with the Lord Jesus and your devotion to Him
  • Do not take yourself too seriously

3. What criteria do you use to measure the effectiveness of an intern serving with you?

  • Did the student come away from the internship understanding the importance of missions?
  • Was the intern willing to serve wherever asked?
  • Did the intern grow in godliness and in humility while serving with us?What would a typical day look like?

Specific skills an intern may expect to develop by the time the internship is completed:

1. Gain a deeper cultural understanding of the Colombian people.

2. Learn how to effectively evangelize in a cross-cultural environment.

3. Effectively share a Bible lesson with children.

Relation of Opportunity to National Church and/or Long-term Goals

Javier started going to the ministry as a teenager, was mentored by the missionary and is now directing the ministry. He is the pastor and ministry director. All ministry efforts are conducted through the local church and local believers. ACTION seeks to please Christ, the Builder and Head of the Church, by conducting our ministries closely with local churches for the advancement and building up of the Body of Christ with the view that all believers will grow in maturity becoming more and more like Christ with the hope that some become pastors, evangelists, teachers, and others cross-cultural missionaries (Matthew 16:18; Ephesians 4:4-16).

Training debriefing
While there will be a quick review of the basics of the Gospel message and your testimony, the training will focus much more on how to properly communicate the Gospel in different settings. Discussion of best ministry practices and your own spiritual growth will also be an important part of the training. You will learn about team building and cultural differences as well. If the participant is going for less than six months, they will receive mentoring and coaching by someone on our Mobilization Team and also work through pre-field reading material and assignments. If the applicant is going longer than six months, they will participate in an in-person orientation and a separate in-person cross-cultural training course before deploying to the field. They will also have to be able to communicate in German, so German classes will be required. All participants will have a debrief interview with the person from our Mobilization Department who mentored and coached them before and during their time of service. They will also be asked to fill out a post-trip evaluation form to help them process their experience and next steps and provide our home office and field missionaries helpful feedback for sending future short-term workers. All participants must be fully vaccinated with COVID vaccine
