What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

Nicaragua

Nicaragua is the largest country on the Central American isthmus. Because of its wide-ranging ecosystems, it’s considered a biodiversity hot-spot and a popular destination for eco-tourists. However, Nicaragua is also one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere, with many families living in pitiful slums. There are government programs to help, but they leave behind the hundreds of thousands of families who don’t meet the $200/month minimum income. With your help we’re going to bridge that gap.

Our project in Nicaragua is based in the city of Leon, where we’re helping families in the small impoverished community of Zaragoza to build their very own safe, decent, sturdy homes. Here is where you’ll come face-to-face with true poverty, as you walk down streets lined with homes made of salvaged tin, plastic, and mud. But in the midst of this struggle, you’ll also see the hope and determination of parents dedicated to ensuring a better life for their families. With the help of local leadership, we work alongside these families in building concrete-block homes, typically 300-400 square feet. These homes protect families from the frequent heavy rains, provide a safe place to do homework, and help rebuild self-confidence and pride.

You can expect to mix and pour concrete, lay blocks, bend and set rebar, transport materials, and other tasks as needed. It’s hard work, but you’ll be led by experienced local masons who will show you what to do, and you’ll find skills you didn’t realize you had. During your off hours you’ll have time to see the city, eat the local food, and build friendships with your hosts and teammates.
