What the Mission Trip Will Be Like
Are you looking to spend a month or more serving and building relationship with orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda?
We are excited to announce a new internship position available at Rafiki Children’s Home. We are looking for someone that can be a Communications and Graphic Design Intern. This position would include updating the Rafiki Africa Ministries’ social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), designing videos, keeping the ministry blog and newsletters up to date. Duties will also include helping with promoting the ministry and fundraising. You will need a camera to take pictures to help with promotion.
This position can be short-term or long-term depending on availability. You would need to raise your own support to cover expenses while in country. However, the ministry will provide for accommodation at the Children’s Home. Fundraising would be needed to cover airfare, food, and transportation.
We are excited about this new position. If you are interested, then please let us know through email – [email protected]
If you feel God leading you to serve children who have been abandoned and abused, serving in Uganda at the Rafiki Africa Ministries Children’s Home may be the opportunity you are looking for! Everyone is welcome and can find some way to use their special gifts.
You will be spending your days ministering to the kids, sharing Jesus with them, and assisting the Ugandan staff in feeding and taking care of the children. Ministry opportunities include: working with children, assisting the care of special needs children, teaching, bible lessons, arts and crafts, providing healthcare, helping in school, housework such as cooking and cleaning, and many more opportunities.
There will be many opportunities for you to minister to the children at the Children’s Home and work alongside the Rafiki Africa Ministries’ full-time staff. If you have special training in childcare, healthcare, teaching, special needs children, administrative work, etc. We would love to use you in those specific areas. If you do not have an area of special training or talent, do not let that stop you. If you have a passion for children, we can use you regardless.
One or two days each week, there will be an opportunity for you to see Kampala and serve in other areas. Some of these ministries include working with youth at risk, working with street kids, witnessing door-to-door in slums, prayer walks, praying for the sick, serving at school for children with disabilities, teach at primary schools, building projects, and serving at babies’ homes. There are many opportunities and you can tell us what your passion is and where you would like to serve. We also go grocery shopping each week. It is usually a full-day event. You are more than welcome to go with us to the open African market and visit with the women selling food.
Dates for a short-term mission trips are flexible. This trip is customizable to fit your schedule. Please let us know what dates you are interested in and we will let you know if spaces are available for those dates. We prefer for short-term missionaries to come for at least 1 month or more so that they have time to adjust to Uganda and are able to invest in the lives of the children. We can have a total of 6-8 short-termers staying at the Children’s Home at one time. We can take on short-term missionaries at any time of the year for any period, providing we have room at the Children’s Home!
Uganda is a very friendly country. There are many different tribes in Uganda and they each have a unique culture. Kampala is a huge city and is very urban. The Children’s Home is located in a safe area and will always put your safety first. The Children’s Home is in a Western-style home with running water and electricity. Sometimes the water is cut off by the city (happens rarely) and some nights we go without electricity. You would most likely share a room with other short-term missionaries in bunk beds. That depends on if there are other people on a short-term mission trip when you are there.
Your trip will be whatever you make of it. You must be flexible, have a heart to serve children, and have the ability to adapt to any situation. You will need to have initiative to do things. You can help in any area that you wish to...wherever you see a need. As a short-term missionary, you will be able to use your unique gifts and talents to serve.
We believe this mission trip is an opportunity for you to experience real Ugandan life. You will be living, serving, and worshiping with Ugandans. You will also have a chance to do the touristy things such as go on a City Tour, shop at the local craft markets for presents, and eat out at the occasional restaurant.
The weekly fee of $300 USD covers your accommodation, food, and transportation within the country.
Your other costs are:
Your airfare (which varies depending upon when you travel but is likely to cost between $1600 to $2200).
Your visa costs are $50 obtainable at the airport.
Any vaccinations (you will need yellow fever, typhoid, and anti-malarial treatment).
Extra spending money for what you do on your day off, sodas, safaris, and presents for family and friends.
