Full Description:
Costa Rica has the highest literacy rate in Central America, and frequently boasts of its free education for all children, yet throughout the country there are pockets of impoverished families who must choose between educating or feeding their children.
Education is free—but to attend school, parents must send their children in approved uniforms and footwear, and pay for a long list of school supplies and fees. Many families in the areas served by Christ For the City are living on a few dollars a month and all the necessary supplies can add up to $100-$150 per child each year.
Children from this economic level attend overcrowded schools held in 2 or 3 shifts per day. Most learning must be done at home in cramped quarters sometimes without the use of electric lights, educated parents, or a quiet place to study.
Christ For the City International programs offer hope to many families locked in poverty. CFCI programs in the slum areas of San Jose provide tutoring to children who desperately need to catch up on their education. Tutoring classes are held to coach school children in reading, writing, English and mathematics. We invite you become a tutor and join us in helping these children reach their goals and break out of the cycle of generational poverty. Not only can you make a difference in their circumstances, but you will build relationships with kids that will allow you to share God’s love.

You will receive pre-field preparation from our Central Office in the U.S. to assist you in arranging your trip, fundraising, and preparing for life in Costa Rica. Once on the field you will be assigned to a missionary mentor who will help you learn your way around San Jose and provide spiritual direction.

Applicants should be Christians who are able to profess agreement with Christ For the City's Statement of Faith (see below). Applicants must also be at least 18 years old/or a high school graduate.

After your initial inquiry, you will be asked to fill out a preliminary application that will serve as your introduction to the organization. If your initial application is approved, a second application and two references will be required. If, after reviewing the application and references, you are officially accepted we will begin assisting you with your trip preparations.

CHRIST FOR THE CITY- STATEMENT OF FAITH
We believe in one God, Creator and Sustainer of the universe, who eternally exists in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
We believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is fully God and fully man. He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on the cross for the sins of the world, was raised bodily and exalted to God's right hand where He makes intercession for His own. He will personally come again.
We believe that God created humankind, male and female, in His own image. However, all creation suffers the consequences of the fall and is under God's judgment.
We believe that because of His love, God sent His Son Jesus Christ, who inaugurated His Kingdom, provided atonement for sin, disarmed the powers and authorities, triumphing over them by the cross, reconciling the world to Himself. He will consummate His Kingdom in righteousness, power, and glory.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, who glorifies Jesus Christ, working in all peoples to bring them to believe and obey Christ. The Spirit dwells in those who believe, equipping and empowering them for lives of holiness and fruitful service.
We believe the Bible to be the divinely inspired and authoritative Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice.
We believe that all who repent and believe in Christ are born into life eternal, delivered from condemnation, and as His Church are called to communicate the Gospel, proclaim the Kingdom, make disciples of all nations, and seek to be instruments of His righteousness, justice, and healing, all to the glory of God.
We believe in the resurrection of the body, the eternal blessedness of believers in the presence of Christ and the eternal separation of unbelievers from Him.
