What the Mission Trip Will Be Like
Being a country who boasts the world’s largest population (1.3 billion as opposed to the US population of approximately 325 million), China never runs out of having something to offer. There are seemingly endless opportunities to experience, places to explore, people to meet, and conversations to be had. In the last century, China has emerged as one of the world’s leading superpowers while still holding on to its many ancient and traditional ways of life. Although a communist country, Buddhism is the predominant religion and dictates the very fabric of her people’s lives. Living under government censorship and reeling from communist propagation that there is no God, the Chinese are a people who are hungry and ready to hear the Truth of the Gospel. Spend your summer in this East Asian country and watch as God does some amazing things through you and your team!
Ministry—All of the ministry you will do in China will be based on relationships. The better a Chinese student knows and trusts you, the more they will listen to what you have to say. Therefore, the English “Culture and Language” programs we create are built around fun, creative, and interactive activities. The China team typically divides its time between two different cities, roughly two weeks in each location. The team is usually divided up with the Chinese into small groups, with two or three Royal Servants in each group. Each day has a mix of games (if you teach a Chinese how to play ninja you’ll have a friend for life), activities (like a huge photo scavenger hunt), songs, and skits (nothing like teaching them a skit about the Easter story to provoke great conversation). Oh… I should say that one of the activities will be dance, but don’t worry guys, It will be a group dance like the Cha Cha Slide. And can I say that there is something amazing about the sight of 150 people jammed in a room and trying to figure out whether you need to move right, or left, or have to jump! Whatever the activity, the Gospel is woven into almost everything you’ll do. Whether in the context of the program itself, having coffee with a couple of Chinese you’ve gotten close to, or when you are out and about discovering the city with your Chinese friends, you’ll be having opportunities to bring your faith into the conversation. This is important because it’s almost a certainty that there will be more than one Chinese student in your group who will not have heard who Jesus is.
Adventure—The China team travels more than most of the other Royal Servants mission trips. You’ll be hauling cross-country like the locals on China’s train system from Wuxi to Shanghai, Shanghai to Fuzhou, and finally Fuzhou to Beijing. That’s a lot of traveling. And yes, those bullet trains really do go well over 160 mph! You’ll be seeing China from a perspective much different from a tourist; you’re going to be immersed in the China few get to experience. When you visit a Chinese home, it will be as a friend and not simply a visitor. You’ll wander alleys that only local people know about, eat food with people from the neighborhood, and visit sites and attractions that may not mean much to a Westerner but are important to the Chinese. You’ll sit down and hang out with young orphans, walk through rice paddies, race to the top of the Great Wall, wave at giant pandas, tool around town in rickshaws, chew on boiled chicken feet (if you’re brave enough), and arrive home chopstick Jedi’s!
Experience Culture—In some countries you have to be intentional to experience the culture, in China you simply have to walk out the door and try to cross the street to know that you’re not at home anymore! You’ll eat local, get into Chinese homes for meals, ride in motorized rickshaws, and be squeezed like a sardine in the Beijing subway. Try buying an ice cream bar; but just know that what is pictured on the outside of the package may not resemble what’s inside the wrapper…though it may look the same, red bean-curd ice cream is NOT the same as chocolate!
