What the Mission Trip Will Be Like
Over the last century, sadly, too many churches have turned their backs on the inner-city. Congregations have moved further and further out of the city and into the suburbs and for many that move stemmed from an idea that the move would strengthen the church (greater access to people with money). Yet once they had moved out into the suburbs they began to realize that too often their new neighbors though they had means didn't understand their REAL need for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Too often people were lulled into a false sense of security based upon the number of zeroes in their checkbooks and didn't have a sense of their spiritual condition and their need for the church.
At the same time that churches were abandoning the inner-city, God was continuing His work there. He was familiarizing folks with REAL needs and their own inabilities to provide things or to provide for themselves a lasting peace. And so God began His work of preparing fields for maturity and a great harvest.
What was lacking? Just YOU! These fields are in desperate need for laborers. And I am convinced that you can find many ways to lend a hand on this mission trip to the inner-city of Pittsburgh (Wilkinsburg). You won't be alone, you will be working with a congregation that has been actively engaging their neighbors for Christ for many years. You will get to work with brothers and sisters in Christ who are deeply committed to seeing the transformative power of the gospel take hold of lives and communities.
You will engage in a number of activities to grow acquainted with the community. First, you will be trained to engage people door-to-door to speak about Jesus Christ, to share the gospel, to get acquainted with the needs of the neighbors and to pray with them and for them. Second, you will set up some tables around the community and invite passers-by to share prayer requests and to lift up needs and thanksgivings to the throne of grace for the encouragement of our neighbors and the saints. Third, you will help with a regular ministry aimed at community children to acquaint them with God's Word and to be an example and mentor to them as you demonstrate the love of Christ to them. Fourth, you will have opportunity to serve in a Christian housing ministry that takes old abandoned houses and prepares them for Christians in need in the city. Fifth, you will play a part in transforming the local environment by participating in an annual community clean-up effort led by the church that boards up old abandoned houses, mows lawns and trims trees and cleans up vacant lots so that local kids can have places to play safely.
I hope the sound of this trip is stirring your imagination and inspiring within you a vision of how YOU could be used of God to meet very big and tangible needs. Typically this trip is about six weeks in length and if you are available for the duration, you WILL grow immensely and be able to establish some really lasting relationships. However, I understand that not everyone has that kind of time available to give to such a project, so we do offer some pro-rated options for various durations (2 weeks, 3 weeks, or the full 4 weeks and we could visit about some options for extended service opportunities for up to 6 months or a year).
The church that we partner with has a huge building that is very well equipped to handle teams, church groups, or school groups. So if you wish to be part of this team (our teams are often assembled from individuals across the globe) please use the link below and begin applying today. Perhaps you are looking for a place that your youth group, or college ministry team could serve, well, this congregation would love to have you come and lay a hand to the plow. Or perhaps you are looking for an opportunity to see your local church grow in its capabilities to respond to the needs that exist in your local community but just need to get some ideas from others that have been blessed of God to learn lots of lessons along the way and which could save you some of those challenges. Then please give our office a call and we can talk about how your group could get involved.
This unique trip is set up to allow you to grow in your capabilities as a youth worker and team leader. This team will be comprised of up to 10 mature Christian men and women who will be tasked with discipling and mentoring groups of young people that will come in for a week at a time of mission service to the host congregation. These week long teams will be comprised of up to 40 youth from across the nation, you will be tasked with overseeing their efforts to help with the kids' program, the community clean-up, the vacation Bible school, and the community garden/food program. Perhaps you recall the shaping influence that older young adults had on your formative years? This is an opportunity for you to play that role in the lives of many youth that are eager to serve Christ and His church and are just needing the encouragement and guidance of those who have begun down the road of a life focused on serving the Lord. Please apply today!
I hope that the Lord will guide you in your decision making process and please know that if you have any questions, just give us a call at (724) 384-8437 or email Matt at [email protected]
Relation of Opportunity to National Church and/or Long-term Goals
This trip provides opportunities that many people tend to shy away from. You will get the opportunity to see how the gospel reaches people in the urban environment and you will see how the host congregation is seeking to be faithful in the discipling and mentoring of those reached by the mission teams.

Mission Trip Offered By RP Missions
RP Missions seeks to provide opportunities for God's people to serve Christ through short-term efforts partnering with established congregations and mission stations. Our primary tasks are to Serve Christ and His Church, Proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, and Disciple the Nations. Our trips are primarily aimed at young people (Sr. High through College) but do consider groups who would like to get acquainted with missionary service. We desire to see Christian men and women grow in their confidence to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and to grow in service to Christ and His Church. You will enjoy working alongside pastors, elders, deacons, missionaries and other church workers that can inspire you with their vision and aid you in discovering the tools that God has been pleased to give you through regular study of His Word and the investment of your parents and local church. If you have an overwhelming desire to serve Christ, to reach the "lost" with the good news of Jesus Christ, and if you are eager to get to know brothers and sisters in Christ from across His kingdom, we hope you will consider applying for an RP Missions trip! Our mission efforts are open to young people from the United States and Canada.
