:: World Servants
Full Description:
Teams are returning to serve the Cree Nation in Fisher River, Manitoba, Canada. (Kym Johnson, World Servants Executive Director and Community Specialist for the Native American and First Nations, was born in Fisher River and is of Cree descent.)
The people of Fisher River warmly welcomed teams last year and are excited about hosting us again. We worked together to help prepare for the National Cree Gathering by staining the community center boardwalk, enjoyed playing bingo with the community elders and hosted Kids’ Club for children during the week. It is always amazing at the sacred ways in which partnerships are formed and completed. What Abba can do with our skills and time will be far more than you can put into words, but it will forever change you as you experience the Cree culture and people of Canada.
We will come alongside the people in Fisher River to work on construction projects that will benefit members of the community. In addition, we will also host Kid’s Club during the week for children ages 4 to grade 6.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Flexibility is the key! ALL ministry/outreach activities are customized to the communities' specific needs and are specifically determined closer to the time of the trip. Our goal is to best partner with the community we are going to serve. Please keep this in mind when discussing trip details with potential participants!

Manitoba sits smack dab in the middle of Canada, located at North America’s geographic centre. The province is bordered by Saskatchewan to the west, Ontario to the east, Nanavut Territory to the north, and to the south by North Dakota and Minnesota. Located just 65 miles north of the US border, Winnipeg is easily accessible by rail, road and air. Manitoba’s landscape is as enchanting as it is diverse, with prairie grassland in the south and west, rugged Canadian shield lakes and forests in the east and north, and arctic coastline and tundra in the extreme north.
Canada has long been known to have a diverse population of First Nations people and one of the Plains Tribes is the Cree Nation. The Cree Reserve, located 2 hours north of Winnipeg, is home to a people full of love, pride in their culture, family, hospitality and easy laughter.
There are many facilities in Fisher River including the Fisher River Cree Nation Recreation Grounds, which is home to an outdoor roofed dance hall, a beautiful pow wow arbor, and many concession stands. The Fisher River Treaty Celebration take place there every August. The Leigh Cochrane Memorial Visitors Centre, a beautiful building with an upper viewing deck, a boardwalk and a unique amphitheatre, is the home to Fisher River's annual community celebration.
The Fisher River Band was established in 1875. As of 2007, the total population was approximately 3,098, with an on-reserve population of 1,709. Fisher River Cree Nation is a fishing community as it is located on the shores of Lake Winnipeg. (Lakes Winnipeg and Manitoba are all that is left of an ancient glacial lake that once covered most of the province.) Fishermen go out in the spring and the fall. The fishermen use commercial fishing boats and the fish are taken for processing to a commercial fishing plant, such as the McBeth Fishery owned by Fisher River Cree Nation. Local fish are Pickerel (Walleye), Mullet (Sucker), Northern Pike (Jack), Perch and Sauger.

Relation of Opportunity to National Church and/or Long-term Goals: |
For sustainable, long-term impact, World Servants staff work with host communities before teams arrive. A team of community leaders are identified to build a vision for their community. We train and equip these leaders to successfully partner with our short-term teams in an effort to build long-term relationships.
Once the short-term mission teams leave, we continue to strengthen relationships with community leaders and identify extended opportunities for future teams to come alongside, as well.
