Full Description:
What are you doing for Spring Break? Join us here in Alaska to get closer to God, meet new friends, serve God by serving others, and have a great time!
Why Alaska? The Pew Research Center just released a study that found Alaska to be the LEAST religious state in the United States. http://pewresearch.org/databank/dailynumber/?NumberID=925
You are going to hit the ground running when you get here. Saturday, we'll watch the start of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race here in Anchorage. That afternoon we'll drive to Willow, Alaska, site of the Iditarod re-start on Sunday. On Sunday, we'll be helping put the race on -- setting every thing up, overseeing parking 1300 cars, working race security, serving as dog handlers, and tearing down and cleaning up after the race. As you rub shoulders with race volunteers, mushers, and musher friends/familes, it is a great time to share your faith. www.iditarod.com
Afterwards, we'll return to Anchorage and begin to go to work doing other things such as volunteering at Anchorage Food Bank for the Hungry, working with kids at the local Boys and Girls Clubs, working with orphan boys, shoveling snow for the elderly, helping at the Native American Head Start Center, and other satisfying projects.
We are going to work hard, but we will also have time to play. For fun, there will be opportunities for snowhiking in the forest, moose-viewing, dogsledding, possibility snowboarding and downhill skiing, worldclass cross-country skiing, ice-fishing, snowshoeing, flightseeing, shopping, and checking out the Northern Lights. No promises, but you might even get a chance to drive a dog team.
The World Class Alyeska ski area is only 45 min away and there will be a day free for you to ski/board if you wish. http://www.alyeskaresort.com/
This project tends to attract a lot of students on Spring Break. If you can, come a day early on Feb 28 and depart on March 6. Also,
if these dates don't work for you, other projects during the rest of the month of March, including a project in a Native village.
Schedule:
Mar 1 Arrive Anchorage
Mar 2 Iditarod Start Anchorage. Travel to Willow.
Mar 3. Iditarod Re-Start in Willow
Mar 4-6 Ministry

Over the past five years we have hosted almost 3,000 volunteers. We will care for you in a manner that honors your time and financial investment.
Airfare to Anchorage is very affordable at this time of year. It can be under $600 from many places. If you ticket early and get a good price, you can do this entire mission for under a thousand dollars -- air and ground together.

IDITAROD: The Last Great Race. The Iditarod is an annual dog sled race held in Alaska. The route goes 1049 miles through track-less wilderness from Anchorage to Nome and celebrates an event in 1925 when sleds brought serum over the trail to save lives during a diptheria epidemic in Nome. Approximately 100 mushers and 2000 dogs participate in this event. It is the most popular sporting event in Alaska and mushers are regarded as celebrities. www.Iditarod.com

If you sign up for this project, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you go to the Iditarod site and sign up as a volunteer. We have had instances where people failed to do this and there was no need for them once they got here. THE SOONER YOU SIGN UP THE BETTER CHANCE OF GETTING A GOOD JOB. You can work as a trail guard (helping dog teams safely cross roads during the race start), security, dog handler (Friday class attendance required), or fencing crew (putting up and taking down fencing for the race). Go to www.iditarod.com and follow the links to "Volunteer"
If you want to work as a dog handler, you must arrange with us to arrive Thursday, not Saturday.
